Gold & Platinum Level Adopters of Soren:

Tony Brown • Vicky Mello • Linda Gray & beloved daughter, Andrea • Terry Furgerson • The Wyatt-Stone Family • The Dunne Family • Jane & Alan Helfen •

Soren came into care in Pendleton, Oregon, in the spring of 2008, when he was less than a week old. He joined the Cascades team in June of that same year. Shortly after his arrival, he was introduced to a female Barn Owl, Nani, with whom he eventually bonded.

Because both showed strong parental instincts, they were transferred to the hospital team and became full-time foster parents to our baby Barn Owl patients. Having an adult mentor of the same species is very beneficial for wild orphans, who are prevented from imprinting on humans and also learn natural behaviors from the adult. We may receive 60 or more Barn Owl nestlings in a single year, so having foster parents on duty is also a huge help to our hospital staff!

Nani and Soren diligently raised dozens of orphans every season until Nani passed away in January 2026. In almost 20 years as a bonded pair, they taught hundreds of nestlings how to be owls. Barn Owls play a key role in managing small mammal populations, so Nani and Soren’s impact will be felt in our ecosystem for many generations to come.
