1. Ensure your personal safety

Assess the area and the bird. If the bird is in a spot that is unsafe (busy road, curve in road, water, oil pit, etc.) do not attempt to rescue it yourself. Contact a permitted rehabilitator for assistance. Rehabilitators have working relationships with local authorities that can assist in dangerous situations. If you have found an injured Bald Eagle or Great Blue Heron, DO NOT attempt to contain it yourself. Call a wildlife rehabilitator!

2. Personal Protective Equipment

When capturing a raptor, wear thick leather gloves. Some raptors are small but they can still cause injury with their talons. You will also need two towels or blankets, an appropriately sized box lined with a towel/blanket with a lid, and an assistant if possible.

3. The Grab

  1. Have your box open and ready to place the bird in.
  2. Approach the bird and toss the towel/blanket over it.
  3. Place your hands on either side of the bird, over each wing.
  4. Lift the bird wrapped in the towel into the prepared box
  5. Close the box and cover with a second towel or blanket

Once the bird is contained in the box, immediately call us to alert us of your arrival time, then drive it to us for care. If for any reason you cannot deliver the bird to us we can arrange for a volunteer to meet you and pick it up.

After Capture, Remember:

  • No food or water in the box with the bird.
  • No peeking! Don’t open the box for any reason.
  • Radio off & minimize all noise.
  • Drive safely.
