As Associate Director, Karen assists with the day-to-day operation of the Center including HR, scheduling and purchasing for the Visitor’s Center, committee support and accounting. She is also the Center’s spreadsheet guru and go-to IT person often asking – “What does the data indicate?”
Her formal education includes degrees in biology (B.S.), botany (M.S.) and plant physiology (Ph.D.). Having designed and led the Master Naturalist program for South Carolina, Karen comes to us with significant experience in organizing, managing and growing adult education programs and is an excellent naturalist herself. She came to this love of nature and specifically of birds from a childhood near the Great Smoky Mountains National Park – with night times steeped in the haunting sounds of Eastern Screech Owls and Whippoorwills.
Karen is also a fiber artist – an outgrowth of learning papermaking and natural dyeing in an effort to teach plant anatomy and chemistry to her students.
