What is Wildlife Rehabilitation?<\/span><\/h3>\n

\u201c<\/span>Wildlife rehabilitation\u00a0<\/span>is\u00a0<\/span>the treatment<\/span>\u00a0and temporary care of<\/span><\/em>\u00a0injured, diseased, and displaced indigenous animals, and the subsequent release of healthy animals to appropriate habitats in the wild.\u201d<\/em>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0–\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Standards for\u00a0<\/span>Wildlife\u00a0<\/span>R<\/span>ehabilitation,<\/span>\u00a02021<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

How We Help Wildlife Patients<\/span><\/h3>\n

At Cascades Raptor Center,\u00a0the Louise Shimmel Wildlife Hospital\u00a0receives\u00a0over\u00a01000\u00a0wildlife patients from\u00a0Lane County and adjacent areas each year.\u00a0Under our permitting from the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife and\u00a0United States Fish and Wildlife Service, we\u00a0admit\u00a0raptors\u00a0for medical treatment and rehabilitation. We also\u00a0triage a\u00a0variety of\u00a0native\u00a0bird species, and some small mammals\u00a0which are transferred to other facilities that have permits to rehabilitate them.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In\u00a0our hospital,\u00a0patients are professionally assessed by\u00a0our veterinarian and rehabilitation staff. Every patient is given the same standard of care that\u00a0you would expect at\u00a0an\u00a0animal\u00a0veterinary hospital. Patients are stabilized with\u00a0oxygen, fluid therapy, and pain management, and\u00a0plans for\u00a0diagnostic workups and nutrition are made on a\u00a0case-by-case\u00a0basis.\u00a0We are fortunate to be able to provide\u00a0diagnostics ranging from blood work to digital radiography\u00a0(X-ray)\u00a0and Computed Tomography (CT).\u00a0Soft tissue and orthopedic\u00a0surgeries,\u00a0as\u00a0well as physical therapy,\u00a0are provided according to the\u00a0patients\u2019\u00a0needs. All of this is done while ensuring our wildlife patients are\u00a0kept in a low\u00a0stress\u00a0environment so that we can ensure\u00a0optimal\u00a0welfare and healing while they are recovering.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Once patients complete their medical\u00a0care\u00a0they are moved to specialized\u00a0outdoor\u00a0aviaries for reconditioning. These aviaries are specifically designed to ensure that birds can fly and maneuver with enough space\u00a0to\u00a0attain\u00a0optimal\u00a0fitness before release. Design parameters also ensure that the birds are safe and that their feathers\u00a0remain\u00a0in good condition.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

When a patient has\u00a0finished reconditioning, they have completed the rehabilitation process.\u00a0When they are\u00a0both\u00a0physically and behaviorally healthy,\u00a0we then release\u00a0them back in their home territory so that they can continue\u00a0to live their best life in the wild.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n<\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"The Louise Shimmel Wildlife HospitalFounded 1990, serving over 1,000 patients each year from Lane County and beyond.Found an animal?Please call our hospital at 541-485-1320 ext. 2.
